As a parent, it’s a beautiful thing to see your kids develop a concern for an issue or cause that is bigger than themselves. Now, virtual worlds for kids are bringing real-world cash to back them up.

Coins for Change Club PenguinThis week Club Penguin announced a new campaign called “Coins for Change.” During Club Penguin play, kids can earn coins which can be used to purchase items in the virtual world. “Coins for Change” lets kids donate their coins to “help kids around the world, help kids who are sick, and help the environment.” Kids can donate to any or all of the causes. The program kicks off Dec. 14. Club Penguin has pledged up to $1 Million to real world organizations following the kids’ direction.

You have to give a hand to the folks behind Club Penguin for understanding their dual audience … the kids that play and the parents that foot the bill. It’s a nice move during the over commercialized holiday season that just might make me grant my daughter’s Christmas wish for a subscription.
